How useful is Critical Thinking?

When working on a larger research project the term critical thinking comes up frequently in academic circles.

As a photographer, research is an important part of the project development. Critically thinking about a subject is an important aspect of this process as the engagement and dedication involved in critical thinking will generally benefit the final project.

The term Critical Thinking describes the independent process of researching a subject and forming an argument to support either side of the discussion before then reaching a conclusion based on the facts and points identified during the research stage.

John Dewey defined critical thinking as a reflection and an "Active, persistent and careful consideration of a belief or supposed form of knowledge in the light of the grounds which support it and further conclusions to which it tends." (Dewey, 1090, p.9)

Advancing critical thinking skills is a great opportunity to grow more confident about the research undertaken generally. Being able to critically reflect on a subject and form a well supported argument is a valuable skill for both Research and Practice.

Looking at the connection of Research and Practice, thoroughly looking at a selected subject from various angles can support the photographic project while the creative process of taken new images in turn can create new ideas and add input to the discussion.

New ideas and angles to explore make a research theme exciting and the essay worth reading. To push the academic boundaries research needs to form new conclusions and create space for new theories to explore and more research questions to answer in the future.

For my research I plan to use critical thinking to independently work on my project and to form a strong argument.

Furthermore Critical Thinking will help me to clearly structure my points of discussion and theories.

By critically reflecting on my subject area and gain more knowledge about the topic generally, I will also be a better judge of the credibility of sources and answer my formulated research questions with a strong argument supporting my conclusion.
